Okay, so this might come across as a little crass but Whitney Who-ston passed away this week and everyone is so upset and remembering her and I ask, WHY? How is it different from the thousands of people that die on a daily basis? The Calgary Sun does a four page spread on her yet when Joe Schmoe dies they charge you hundreds of dollars to do a obituary.
People are coming out of the woodwork upset by her and “remembering” her. What about poor Joe Schmoe, he was someone to be remembered I’m sure. Why can’t we let her friends and family mourn like they should and let Joe Schmoe be mourned by his friends.
Lets keep in mind that Ms Who-ston was a confirmed drug addict, a self-professed spouse abuser and a megalomaniac. Yet we will celebrate her life almost as much as we did the pope. I personally know people who fit this bill to a tee and yet when they pass do you think the news is going to do an expose’ on them? Of course not. Why then should they do one on Ms. Who-ston? Because she’s famous? Who cares?
Remember when Mikey Jackson died and the same week what’s her face from Charlie’s Angels died too. Who got the most press, the alleged child molester or the beautiful actress who didn’t cause all sorts of drama? Of course we all know that I’m talking about Farrah Fawcett. I was more bothered by her passing than the washed up, racially confused, alleged child molester. She was beautiful and it seems like she took her fame with a grain of salt and didn’t go cuckoo.
But in the end, of the three of them (my personal opinion is that Mikey isn’t dead), why should it matter that they’re dead? Again, thousands of people across the country die daily, many of which go through such heroic battles with cancer or other diseases, does anyone care that they are gone besides their family and close friends?
Of course it’s a double standard and we should be treating all people the same, let’s put a little more emphasis on the Joe Schmoes that die and a little less on the Whitneys, Mikeys, Elvis’, Farrahs. I say the first thing that should level the playing field is to contact the newspapers and insist that they stop charging for obituaries. After all if the famous people are going to get “free press” so should the Schmoes.
I am finished, you may go now.
