Superman?

Here I am sitting in my recliner, watching TV.  I should be at work but the IT guy wasn’t able to get my LAN port turned on yet so instead of sitting with my thumb up my bum, I figured I would save the company money and go home.

I came home, had a snack and decided to watch some TV, most of the world is watching The World Cup right now, but I’m not fond of Football(soccer) so I decided to watch  Superman 2 which was on TV.

There are so many inconsistencies that it’s mind boggling, remember my previous post about continuity?  This falls in the same vein for me.  So, if you haven’t seen it, just take my word for it, if you have seen it, follow along on my magic carpet ride.

Lois is convinced that Clark is Superman that she falls into the river feeding the Niagara Falls, Clark not wanting to give up his cover is watching all concerned.  Then he uses his heat vision through his glasses to cut a branch for Lois to hang on to.  Shouldn’t the heat vision melt his glasses?

Next Ursa, one of the bad guys(girl) in this movie picks up a snake and is admiring it, it bites her.  These people are bullet proof, how can a snake bit through the skin?

Lois and Superman are flying to his ice home in the North, and whenever they fly together, she seems to be able to maintain a horizontal plane.  Superman is lying flat, but shouldn’t Lois still be constrained to gravity, even if it’s her legs dangling?

When they get to his ice home, she’s in a skirt and blouse, shouldn’t she be cold?  Isn’t it at the North Pole?  Superman is not affected by the cold but I’m certain that she should be.

Now this is just the little things that I was thinking as I watch the movie, the main reason I wanted to write this blog was specifically about Superman.

Let’s look at the entire Superman idea, first off I know he isn’t real, this is all fiction, however most fiction should still follow logic unless it is established for it not to  by some reason.  As an example, Superman can fly, this defies logic and physics, but it is established that he is an alien and he has super powers, which includes flying, that comes from being exposed to our yellow Sun.

Superman lives and works in Metropolis, which is loosely based on New York.  If you look at the idea that Superman is trying to save people all the time, in a city the size of New York (let’s include the boroughs in this estimation), has a population of 8 million people.    It seems that Superman is only looking after the people of Metropolis, why are these people special?  Why doesn’t Superman, with all his ideals, fight for every person?

Let’s do some math now.  Just in the city of Metropolis with 8 million people, say that daily 1% of the denizens are in need or are subject to some crime, that’s 80,000 people needing help.  With an average of 5 minutes per person, that’s 6 thousand hours per day he’d have to work to save just the people of Metropolis.

How can he handle a job as a newspaper reporter, a social life with Lois and being a superhero?  Even if we were to make it 1/100th of a percent, he’d still be working 60 hours a day to help the people of Metropolis.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Superman, I like the idea of Superman, and superheroes.  I just last night watched a Thor movie.  I enjoy watching movies based on the Marvel and DC universes and I enjoy reading comics from those universes too.  I guess my thing is, I just want a little bit more logic involved.

Thank you!

Have a Super day!
