I may have mentioned before that I am a creature of routine. I do the same thing almost every morning. When I am trying to do something, I tend to follow the same routine to try to ensure the same results. Sometimes these routines are more destructive, or distracting than others.
When I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is make a pot of coffee, toast a bagel, sit at my computer, read my newspaper e-edition, drink my coffee and eat my bagel. I go through my blog spam and delete the spam and approve what isn’t spam. From there I go on with my day in a usually non-routine way.
What makes me think of this right now is the fact that there is a Def Leppard documentary kind of thing on the TV, and at one point I used to listen to a fair amount of Def Leppard for a period of a few months.
As most of you also know, I’ve been trying to write a book for the past thirty plus years. At one point when I was about eighteen, I was trying to write some sort of fiction, and while I was writing it, I would listen to my brothers Def Leppard Hysteria cassette tape. I only liked side one so I would write listening to side one and when it was done, I would rewind it and take a break.
This took me quite a while to get a little bit out so I listened to it a lot. It took long enough that my brother, who had been incarcerated, was released and when he got home he wanted his Def Leppard tape back and I couldn’t write any more of this story.
Fast forward to Christmas I received the same album on CD and wanted to continue writing my book, but the CD was such that after the first six songs, I didn’t stop and let me take my requisite break. The routine was broken, I couldn’t continue to write that story.
This has happened to one extent or another in my other projects. I have so many unfinished projects because at some point my routine was broken and I couldn’t go back.
This blog is very similar, with the whole COVID-19 thing going on, my routine has been impacted and I haven’t been able to devote the time I wanted to my blog, or my YouTube channel either.
Time for some watermelon.
