India – Day -1

Most of you know that I won a trip to India, I am trying to blog about the experience here in India and have finally managed to get a chance to sit down on day 4/5 of the trip to give you an update.  I want to start before the beginning.

Many of you may know that I had moved to High River, Alberta back in October 2014.  For those of you who don’t know about High River, it is a small town half hour South of Calgary.  We chose to move here based on the fact that housing prices are cheaper than in Calgary and even with the cost of gas to commute back and forth it is still less expensive than renting in Calgary.  We also wanted to get out of the “big city” and experience some small town life and values.

Leaving Calgary was rough but it seemed to be okay, the only hiccup was that I wanted to find a local job, one where I didn’t have to drive into the city every day and also get to know the local people and flavour.  After some job searching I found a job a local cellular telephone dealership.  One of the perks was that the place was a little over a mile from home and it was close to “downtown” High River.

The job was part time and pay wasn’t so hot but I thought it was a chance to get into it all in the town.  I did manage to get to know the people and the flavour of the town.  I worked alone 2 out of the 3 days that I was working so I could go next door the local Chinese food restaurant and get myself some soup or what not for lunch.

I also found that the local 7-11 which was severely damaged during the flood of 2013 was just opening up.  I took the opportunity to walk over and get myself a filling(if unhealthy) lunch each day for a decent price.  I found then that 7-11 had an app that I could install where every 7th drink was free, considering that my lunches consisted of a Double Big Gulp of Dr Pepper, it made sense that I would use the app and get a free drink every couple weeks.

My routine went on day in and day out.  I soon found that their coffees weren’t that bad(remember I worked at a local coffee shoppe in Calgary, so I was a bit of a coffee snob).  Coffee was included in the 7th drink deal.  That meant that if I bought my coffee before work, and my lunch, I would get my free drink for a day off.  Bingo, I was hooked on phonics, err I mean I was hooked on the app.

I noticed one day while getting something from 7-11 that they were having a contest, every time you scanned the app you were entered into the 7 Wonders of the World Contest.  Not knowing or really caring about the contest, I didn’t look into the details, I just continued to scan the app and get my 7th drink free.

Stay tuned for Day 0
