Cherry

First there was Peaches, then Grapes (Don Cherry), now Cherry. Sounds like a fruit salad. https://youtu.be/LmR7G208ug4

I like food, I like drink, I like other stuff too. I was originally going to call this entry Vices but decided against it. I don’t want to admit that these are vices (Runningfawn would disagree).

To people who know me, this particular subject matter shouldn’t surprise you. I do love to eat, and therefore I believe you need to know how to cook, which to my family’s opinion, I can. I love to drink, sodas specifically, but a good scotch doesn’t go amiss after a delicious supper. Do you know what goes well with a good scotch? A cigar! I do love my cigars too.

Like most people, I am very particular about my habits. Food – I enjoy most different types of cuisine, Japanese or authentic Mexican are my favourites, but I love to cook and eat most other foods.

In regards to soda, or pop as it’s called in Canuckistan, I generally prefer all of Pepsi’s offerings, including Dr Pepper (I know that Dr Pepper is bottled by Coke in the USA). My exception to this rule is Cherry Coke. I love Cherry Coke, it is in my opinion the nectar of the Gods. The problem though, is that Cherry Coke isn’t available year round here. If I am lucky, Coke will put it out in the summer for a very limited time, then they mess with it, make it Cherry Vanilla Coke, or this year’s abomination – Cherry Sorbet Coke.

I used to travel down to the great US of A to get my Cherry Coke fix, buy cases and bring them back to enjoy at my leisure. Last year Pepsi brought back it’s Wild Cherry Pepsi, and announced that it would be a “permanent addition” to their Canadian line up. Coke didn’t do anything like that at all. They just snuck it out for a very limited time and then messed with the flavour to try make me mad ( I know it’s a personal slight against me, don’t even get me started on the fact that they had NO Cherry Coke products at the Coke store on the Vegas Strip). So when Pepsi declared Wild Cherry permanent, I decided to stick with them. So long Cherry Coke (I’ll miss you)!!

Just like my extreme preference for Cherry Coke vs any other soda, I have an extreme preference for my scotch. I have tried several hundred different scotches in my life and have only found two that I really enjoy. First and foremost, The Glenlivet 15 year old, which is finished in a sherry cask and you can taste the difference in the final notes. This scotch is by far my favourite and when it comes to price point, it’s fairly reasonable, around $80 a bottle. When I can’t get my G15, I go with Tomatin, they also have one that’s finished in French oak barrels and it’s a close second to the G15 and usually a bit less expensive, around $60 a bottle. If given my druthers I would have an ounce or two of these a night to round out my dinner.

And of course, like I said, a scotch pairs so well with a good cigar. I have tried many cigars, Cuban, Dominican Republic, German, Ecuadorian, Nicaraguan, from fairly expensive to the cheapest of cheap. Over time my tastes have evolved and I have found that the best bang for my buck, and my ideal cigar is a Quorum Maduro Toro. This Nicaraguan cigar is robust in flavour, burns evenly and while it doesn’t have the reputation of a Cuban, I find it’s head and shoulders better, and it’s typically 1/6th the price. If I were to take a trip to the US, I have figured that including the cost of gas, lodging and food, I still only pay about $6 a cigar, whereas with our “sin tax”, the same cigar costs $15 plus. I burn through 2 of these a day.

So,, in a nutshell, I have a very “refined” taste, I like Cherry Coke, The Glenlivet 15, and a Quorum Maduro Toro cigar. Got it? If you want to know what to get me as a gift, this is a very concise list. Yummy! Yummy!
