Propriety

I know I am the last person in the world to talk propriety.  If you interact with me on a daily basis you’ll know that I am anything but proper.  I have a bit of a lewd or crass personality and it sneaks its way out on a regular basis.  I personally think I do it for the shock factor but perhaps I just don’t know any better.

That being said, I like to go out with my wife (http://ihaveanopiniontoo.blogspot.com/)a few times a year to enjoy a show or performance.  We specifically like to go to see comedians.  We’ve seen the likes of Ron James, Ron White, Shaun Majumder, Norm MacDonald, and last night John Pinette.  When we go out to these shows we like to dress up, go for a nice little dinner and act all civilized.

What amazes me is that I am certain that we were raised to understand that going out was a special thing and to get dressed up for it.  It seems that every time we go to an event like a comedian or what not, less than a quarter of the people there are dressed up.  The majority are dressed in jeans (not even “dress jeans”), or sweats.  I find this very disconcerting, it’s supposed to be a nice evening.  I’m sure that most people who go to these events go for dinner first and my age seems to be the median age of the show goers.

Were these people not taught that “to go out” was to be a special thing which entails getting dressed up?  Were they taught this and just disregard it (like most of my dinner conversation..)?

I think it’s a sign of respect for the performer(s) or the person that you are accompanying to get dressed up. I’m not saying get dressed in a tuxedo or ball gown.  Even now I forgo wearing a suit to these events.  I go dressed in what would be considered business casual, dress pants and a dress shirt.

I sure that some of you are saying well, I have to get dressed up for work, when I am going out with my partner I should be able to relax and wear whatever I want.  I should be to enjoy the show however I want.  Sure, why not?  I know that I wear dress pants and a dress shirt to work every day with dress shoes and what not.  I can understand the need to get into something relaxing.  I would definitely agree to wearing jeans or sweats or whatever if you happened to work daily in a suit and nightly went out to these events.  I’m sure that eventually you’d get tired of putting the “monkey suit” on.

I do know Calgary though and I know that these “events” don’t happen that often that a person would be wearing a suit all day and all night daily.

Perhaps I am just too old fashioned.  Perhaps I shouldn’t get dressed up to go to the picture show.  Perhaps I should not renew my seasons tickets to the opera and ballet.  Perhaps I shouldn’t enjoy seeing my wife dressed up to the nines to enjoy said picture show or opera or ballet.

I know that when either my wife or I are done work we come home and get undressed as quickly as possible and are reluctant to put clothes on.  I know that when my wife gets dressed up it’s going to be an amazing night for me, because I am next to the most beautiful girl in the room.  I also know that when she gets dressed up I want to make sure I bring my “A” game to at least show that I am almost worthy of being in her presence for the evening.

If you are one of those people who are always dressed to the nines and NEED to dress down to go to a show or an event, let me be the first to say I am sorry that your regular life is stuffy.

For those of you who are just lazy or just don’t care.  Come on… treat the one you love to a night out on the town dressed for success.
