I was excited for today. Each year I am excited for this season. In my life, I have three seasons I look forward to, Christmas season, CFL season, and Roll Up the Rim season.
In an effort to bring the entire Roll Up The RIm game into the 21st century and for supposed environmental friendliness, they moved the game from rolling an actual rim to making it a game on the app. Apparently the plan was originally to encourage reusable cups and give bonus “rolls” for said reusable cups.
With the introduction of the C virus and the ensuing pandemic, they have removed the entire reusable cup scenario from their roll out of this promotion. Originally they were planning on having a set number of roll up the rim cups where you did the traditional rim rolling, but due to said C virus they decided against that, understandably. No one wants to touch a winning rim that someone else’s lips have been on.
So it comes down to just a digital game, which their competitors have used in the past. I believe that the competitors lost out during this season due to the engagement included in the rim rolling promotion.
This morning, with much anticipation, Runningfawn and I woke up and rushed out to Tim Horton’s for our morning coffee and our first rims to be rolled. We ordered and paid using the app which would entitle us to our ‘rollable rims’. Once we received our beverages we “rolled” our “rims” and ta-da! we winned nothing either time and I felt let down. It’s not the not winning, it was the lack of the tactile feedback of not having something physical to play the game with.
I fear that if Tim Horton’s doesn’t change something with the game for this year or next, we’ll lose out on a Canuckistan icon of the Roll Up The Rim game. Not a huge loss but still a loss of something fun and enjoyable in getting your daily coffee.
I will, of course, continue to get my coffee from Tim Horton’s, but I don’t think that I will be going out of my way to get a second (or third) cup to play the game.
I think this year’s game is going to be equivalent to a rotting pumpkin.
PS Maybe people who are stockpiling toilet paper can get their roll on instead of rolling their cup rim.
