As I may have mentioned before, I am a hard core addict to movies and a lot of TV shows. Not an addict to hard core movies and TV shows. I watch a lot of movies in my down time, I watch so many different genres of TV and movies, I watch movies several times. Generally I feel that I have to watch a movie or a good TV show twice to get my full opinion formed.
I have certain expectations from some TV shows or movies based on the cast. I will watch, and for the most part enjoy, anything with Ryan Reynolds in it (I even enjoyed The Green Lantern). I will watch and enjoy almost any Kevin Smith movie. If I enjoy a certain actor, I put of a lot of stock into the show/movie that they are appearing in.
When I see a commercial for an upcoming movie or TV show, I get excited when I see that a certain actor is in it. Which brings me to Hugh Laurie. I fell in love with the actor in House, I did some not so deep diving and found out he’s also a musician. I have his music on my phone and I listen with great joy when I need that certain mood.
A little over a month ago, I saw a commercial for Avenue 5, a new Hugh Laurie TV show. I was excited to see his sardonic whit on TV again. I set my PVR so I could watch it when it debuted. I have since seen many commercials for the show, especially prior to the premiere.
The day came for me to watch the first episode. The house was quiet and dark. It was the perfect setting for me to watch my new favourite show. After half an hour, my only response was “Huh…”, not wow, or wonderful, just huh I was dumbfounded by the lack of greatness the show was.
No problem, sometimes it takes two episode to get the story going and make the show great. I wait a week, record the second episode, get ready to watch it, Again, the house is quiet and dark, perfect setting for an awesome show set in space. Half hour later, my response was “Huh, that didn’t thrill me.”
I have since watched all episodes that have since aired and am still reticent about the quality of the show. The premise is good, they have lots of good actors in it, but I find it’s just so boring. I don’t look forward to watching it.
I will admit, that the most recent episode (number 4 or 5) I did laugh a couple times, but that was it. I still feel underwhelmed by the show. I will continue to watch it because I feel that I owe it that much.
I’m hoping that it gets better, soon otherwise I feel like it’s squirting grapefruit juice in the eye.
